Water Pump Replacement

Gaurav Shimpi
A damaged car water pump can affect the engine and other car parts as well. So, it is better to replace the water pump, and it is not that difficult. Here is a step-by-step guide on water pump replacement.
Water pump is the most important part of the car cooling system, as it helps pump the water to the radiator. When the car starts getting old, the frequent heating up of the engine is a common complaint. A defective pump might be a common reason. Though the pump may vary according to car models, the basic functioning and the main parts will remain the same.
This pump generally consists of main housing body, main shaft, impeller, seals, gasket, bearings, and flanges. A defective pump can also disrupt the heating mechanism of the car, which is important during winters. If you are confused about how to replace the pump, here is a step-by-step guide on water pump replacement procedure.

Important Instructions to Follow

A water pump helps to regulate the temperature of the car engine. A damaged pump is one of the major problems, as it can eventually damage the car engine considerably.
You must consider replacing the pump immediately if there is a leakage of a coolant underneath your car, or if you can smell the coolant when the air conditioner is switched on, as a failed pump can pose a threat to other car parts as well.
The steps given here for replacing the pump are generalized and may differ from car to car.

1. Gather all the tools, like screwdrivers, wire brush, new hose clamps, gasket, gasket sealer and scraper, ratchet wrench with joint, open wrenches, and a new pump.
2. The next step is to ensure your safety as well as the overall car safety, so keep all the inflammable materials, sharp instruments, and hazardous materials at a safe place, preferably at a long distance from the car.
3. Remove the negative terminal of the battery, and use jack stands to support the vehicle. You can put the car in gear or set the parking brakes, and also make sure the ignition is off. This will ensure that the car does not move while the process is on.
4. Before you start working, ensure that the engine is cool. Remove the hose of the lower radiator, and drain the coolant from the radiator or the engine block into a drain pan.

5. Now, unbolt and remove the fan clutch along with the fan. Replace the fan if it is damaged or is worn out.
6. In some car models, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, cars belts, and alternator may come in the way of the water pump. But, instead of unwiring these, just put them out of the way.

7. After this, remove the hoses, bolts, and belts that are connected to the pump. Also remove all the fasteners that are holding the pump onto the engine.
8. Now, lift the pump from the engine. Start the re-installation process by cleaning the gasket material, mounting surface, and the threads of the mounting.

9. Place the new pump on the housing. Tighten the mounting bolts, and attach the bolts in the original positions.
10. Replace the clamps and reconnect all the hoses. Now, tighten the belts, and make sure that there are no loose ends.

11. Close the drain pipe, and fill coolant in the radiator. Lastly, check whether all the bolts, clamps, and belts are properly tightened.
If you find these steps too exhausting or difficult, you may seek professional help. The replacement cost can range between $200 and $800. This cost may vary according to locality and the car model.
