How to Install a Fuel Pressure Gauge

A fuel pressure gauge is an important component of every automobile. It needs to be installed with care lest it creates problems in the engine. Here, let us learn how to install a fuel pressure gauge.
For a vehicle to run without problems its engine needs to be in good working condition. For proper functioning of the engine, fuel must be supplied to it in the stipulated amount with correct pressure.
In case the fuel pressure is too low, it may cause problems to the engine causing it to misfire. In the same manner, excess fuel in the engine can result in unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber that can damage the spark plugs. It can also lead to the wastage of fuel.
To put a stop to these problems, installing a fuel pressure gauge is a must. You can do this yourself, or get your automobile to a garage, where the mechanic may do it for you.

Guidelines for Installing a Fuel Pressure Gauge

A fuel pressure gauge works as regulator to channelize fuel to the engine for its smooth functioning. This device adjusts and monitors the pressure of the fuel to be delivered to the engine. It also helps determine the amount of fuel the engine should receive.
In case the fuel pressure gauge is not functioning properly, then it needs to be replaced. If this device is not replaced on time, then the engine may receive more fuel than is required, and may get dysfunctional. So replacing the damaged fuel pressure gauge should be top priority the next time you take your car for its routine maintenance and servicing.
Here are a few instructions regarding how to install a fuel pressure gauge.
  • Before you install a fuel pressure gauge in your car, make sure you turn off the engine. Wear hand gloves and goggles as a safety measure. Open the hood of the car and dislodge the gas cap.
  • Once the hood has been opened, you will notice a fuel test port. This will be near the intake manifold of the car on the fuel rail.
  • A rubber hose, connecting the fuel filter and fuel induction system can be seen. Using a rag or a piece of cloth under the rubber hose, cut the line with the help of a plier. As the fuel escapes from the hose, the rag will act as a catch and soak up the fuel in case it drips.
  • After this, slide a hose clamp to stem any more fuel flow. The clamps can be slid at the cut ends of the fuel line. Now insert one end of the fuel line into the socket of the fuel pressure gauge. Once the fuel line has been inserted into the gauge, slide the hose clamp in place at the point of intersection of the hose and fuel pressure gauge.
  • There will be a screw, with the help of which the clamp can be attached firmly to the fuel pressure gauge. For this you will need a screwdriver in order to tighten the screw in place so that it does not dislodge itself. Turn the screw in clockwise direction on the clamp.
  • In a similar fashion, slide the hose clamp on the other end of the fuel line. Insert it into the second end of the fuel pressure gauge, and tighten the clamp in place. Wipe off any dropped fuel on the gauge with the help of the rag.
  • To mount the gauge pod on the dashboard, push it in the given socket. Connect the red and black wires on the pod with the help of screws in the allotted space. The black wire should be linked to the connector, whereas the red wire is attached to the fuse panel, which can be found on the dashboard behind the steering wheel.
  • Now connect the pod to the fuel pressure gauge in the bonnet with the help of a yellow colored switch in the fuel filter housing. With the help of a wrench unscrew the bolts and connect the wire ends and secure the bolts in place again. You may need to fix an NPT (National Port Threads) adapter to the fuel line into the fuel pressure canister.
  • Also check for any leaks in the engine. Once you have confirmed there are no problems, close the hood and give ignition to start the engine.
