Fuel Filter Replacement - Changing a Fuel Filter

Fuel filter should be replaced regularly, in order to supply clean fuel to the engine, which is important for maintaining the engine performance. To replace it, first you should locate it, remove it along with the holder, and install a new one.
A fuel filter, as the name signifies, is basically a paper that is placed in the fuel line, for filtering out dust and dirt particles from the fuel, before passing it to the engine. It is used in majority of the internal combustion engines.
It not only helps in removing the contaminants, but also improves the durability of the pump and injectors. It also enhances the performance of a engine by supplying clean gasoline to it.

Maintenance

Similar to other car parts, fuel filters should be maintained properly. Otherwise, accumulation of contaminants, restricts the flow of fuel to the engine, which in turn reduces the engine performance and creates various car problems. Some superior products can be cleaned and reused again. The easiest maintenance tip is changing it at regular intervals, at least once in a year.

Replacement Instructions

Some of the signs of a clogged fuel filter are low engine performance, engine not starting, and the engine stopping in between. In such cases, you can check the component for the accumulation of contaminants.
You can remove it and blow air through it by attaching a plastic hose. If there is resistance in passing air, then it is dirty and requires replacement for optimum engine performance.
To change a fuel filter, you require a new good quality product, new fuel line washers, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, and rags. Also, wear protective glasses and gloves during the replacement procedure.
Prior to changing this component, cut off the engine and allow it to cool down properly. The instructions may vary from one model to another. For safe and easy replacement, you can refer to the service manual.
First of all, locate the filter; you can refer to the user manual for car repair. It may be present under the car's hood or under the trunk of the car. In case, you cannot find it, you can consult with a professional car repairer. Remove any protective guards that line it, with the help of a correct size screwdriver or a wrench. Some models have mounting bracket bolts that secure it in place.
The next step is removing the fuel lines; you can loosen the connections of the lines on either side of the filter by using screwdriver and/or wrench, whichever is suited. Keep the fuel lines in a vertical position or cap it with a pencil, so as to prevent leakage from the pipes. Loosen the mounting bracket from the old filter (if any) and fasten in the new one. Following this, you can remount the new one in the vehicle. Make sure that it is oriented in the correct direction.
Reinstall the guards (if any) and make the required connections with the fuel lines. You can check for any leakage, by starting the car. If you replace it on your own, then cost incurred is very less. A new fuel filter may cost about $10-$20. Replace this part of your car regularly, so as to achieve the best engine performance.
