Car Window Tinting

People tint their car windows for a number of reasons―privacy, security, aesthetic value, etc. However, different countries have different rules relating to tinting. While some allow only certain types of tints, some allow tinting as a whole only under certain situations. More on this in the paragraphs below.

There are a number of ways in which you can tint your car windows. From the simplest dyed film to a hybrid film, you have a lot of options.

Deposited film is a vacuum-sealed film, which is in a tank that has aluminum or nickel. The hot gas in the tank leads the metals to coat the car window, which creates a dark surface.

Another type of film is one that is dyed for heat blockage. Cheapest among the lot, this type of tinting is the least durable as well.

The metal is bombarded with positive ions at the atomic level in this sputtered film type. These particles are collected on ultra-clear polyester, or on the basic film that is later fixed to the window.

Sputtered film uses no dyes or pigments, and the metals used generally will not oxidize. Sputtered film is also known for having less reflection, leading to a clearer view.

Hybrid film is another type of window tinting, using a combination of a processes that involve dyed film and metals. Less reflection, overall darkness as against good heat, and UV blocking potential is what makes this the best bet.

A number of window tinting laws regulate the level of window tinting. There are generic laws for the entire U.S. and other intricacies and alterations in those laws are done by a respective state.

Needless to say, the most basic laws are regarding how dark the tinting can be. Darkness of the tint is determined as per the Visible Light Transmission (VLT). VLT refers to the percentage of light passing through the glass and tinting film. Mirrored or metallic surfaces, which can prove to be potential light hazards for other drivers, are not permitted. In addition to these, there are some regulations like requirements for dual side mirrors, in case the back windows are tinted.

Finally, the cost of tinting depends upon the type of film and the size of the vehicle primarily. Performance warranty too is a cost consideration along with how credible the company is. The price also depends on the brand and type of tint used.
