How to Repair a Car Bumper

Bumpers are the first line of defense to your automobile, in case of an accident or a collision. So naturally, they're bound to get hit and buggered more, in comparison to other parts of your car. You can always replace the bumper panel, however, many people cover the bumper with a 'tough-to-remove' bumper sticker, which conveniently hides the damages. For fixing the bumper, the common procedure includes sanding, grinding, sculpting, and painting.

Speaking of damages on a bumper, they could be variable. Scathe like holes, dents, scuffs, tears, cuts, or scratches could be called damages, which would need a repairing hand. If the bumper has suffered extensive damage, it might need professional work. However, if we're talking about just a little tear and scratches, you can easily take care of these yourself.

Usually the kit includes accessories like sandpaper, fillers, grain paper, and touch-up paint colors. The kit is sold for not more than USD 16,000. Many garages keep these type of all-in-one kits and tools. Nowadays, almost all car bumpers are made of plastic; special kits tending to these are available in the market.

1. Raise your car using the jack and rest it on the jack stand.
2. Slip under the car and unscrew the bolts holding the bumper to the frame. Pull it out gently.
3. Open your car repair kit and use the putty to patch up cuts and tears on the bumper.

4. Next, sand the plastic bumper surface using sandpaper until smooth.
5. Side by side, keep wiping the bumper with a cloth that has degrease on it.
6. Let the bumper dry out completely.

7. Apply a coat of auto primer to the worked surface, allow it to dry. Decide on the no. of coats depending on how much cover-up is needed.
8. Once the primer on the bumper has dried out, apply a coat of auto paint to it.
9. Don't replace the bumper immediately; let it dry overnight.
10. Next day, replace the bumper, and screw the bolts back in their place.

If the damaged bumper is left unserviced, it may wear out sooner, which would be difficult to repair later on. Now that you know how to repair it yourself, don't waste any time.
